Bar Code: 2215, 2303

Descprition: In The Technology of Paper, students explore theproperties of paper, make paper by hand, and discover how the propertiesof paper relate to how it is used. By testing six types of paper for smoothness,tear-resistance, opacity, water-resistance, and ink receptivity, studentsdeepen their understanding of the relationship between the properties ofa certain type of paper andits intended uses. Students read about industrialpapermaking and explorehandpapermaking. Using the class hand-papermakingprocess, students investigatethe role of additives and of embedding andembossing in the production ofpaperwith a variety of properties. In afinal activity, students apply theirlearningand experience to work througha four-step technological design processasthey create their own recycledpaper product.
