"Sound"-sational

Student Programs Lesson Information, Standards Correlations, and Post Visit Activities

“Sound”-sational: (Grades 3 & 4• 60 minutes) Students will discover what sound is, how it is produced, and how it travels through gases, liquids, and solids. Using toys, musical instruments, and hands-on activities, we will explore waves and vibrations and learn how to manipulate pitch and volume. Students will also experiment and work collaboratively to construct a simple musical instrument and play a song.

Grade 3 Science
Motion and Sound
Standard 3-5:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of how motion and sound are affected by a push or pull on an object and the vibration of an object. (Physical Science)

Indicators:
5.5 Recall that vibrating objects produce sound and that vibrations can be transferred from one material to another.
5.6 Compare the pitch and volume of different sounds.
5.7 Recognize ways to change the volume of sounds.
5.8 Explain how the vibration of an object affects pitch.

Grade 4: S4P2 a, b

Grade 4 Science
S4P2:
Students will demonstrate how sound is produced by vibrating objects and how sound can be varied by changing the rate of vibration.

Indicators:
a. Investigate how sound is produced.
b.
Recognize the conditions that cause pitch to vary.
