Rockin' & Rollin'

Student Programs Lesson Information, Standards Correlations, and Post Visit Activities

Rockin’ & Rollin’: (Grades 6 & 8 • 60 minutes) Students handle and classify rocks and investigate how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are interrelated in the rock cycle. Sediments and fossils are examined and described, and a dichotomous key is used to identify 12 rock specimens.

Pre & Post Visit Activities

This lesson supports the following science standards:

South Carolina Schools

Georgia Schools

Grade 8: SCSS 2.2, 2.3, 3.4, 3.6, 3.7

Grade 8 Science
Earth's Biological History
Standard 8-2:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of Earth's biological diversity over time. (Life Science, Earth Science)

Indicators:
2.2
Summarize how scientists study Earth's past environment and diverse life-forms by examining different types of fossils (including molds, casts, petrified fossils, preserved and carbonized remains of plants and animals, and trace fossils).
2.3 Explain how Earth's history has been influenced by catastrophes (including the impact of an asteroid or comet, climatic changes, and volcanic activity) that have affected the conditions on Earth and the diversity of its life-forms.

Earth's Structure and Processes
Standard 8-3:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of materials that determine the structure of Earth and the processes that have altered this structure. (Earth Science)

Indicators:
3.4
Explain how igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are interrelated in the rock cycle.
3.6
Explain how the theory of plate tectonics accounts for the motion of the lithospheric plates, the geologic activities at the plate boundaries, and the changes in landform areas over geologic time.
3.7
Illustrate the creation and changing of landforms that have occurred through geologic processes (including volcanic eruptions and mountain-building forcers).

Grade 6: S6E5 a, c, d, e, f

Grade 6 Science
S6E5: Students will investigate the scientific view of how the earth's surface is formed.

Indicators:
a. Compare and contrast the Earth’s crust, mantle, and core including temperature, density, and composition.
c.Classify rocks by their process of formation.
d. Describe processes that change rocks and the surface of the earth.
e. Recognize that lithospheric plates constantly move and cause major geological events on the earth’s surface.
f. Explain the effects of physical processes (plate tectonics, erosion, deposition, volcanic eruption, gravity) on geological features including oceans (composition, currents, and tides).
