Primarily Bears

Student Programs Lesson Information, Standards Correlations, and Post Visit Activities

Primarily Bears
:
(Grades 4K & 5K • 60 minutes) Students will compare and contrast basic characteristics of the black bear, the brown bear, and the polar bear. They will compare bear weights, order the three bears by size, and graph the results. Students will also participate in hands-on games as they learn the importance of bears’ sense of smell, what types of habitats they live in, and foods they eat.

Grade K: SCMS 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 5.3, 6.1, 6.2

Kindergarten Science
Characteristics of Organisms
Standard K-2:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of organisms. (Life Science)

Indicators:
2.1
Recognize what organisms need to stay alive (including air, water, food, and shelter).
2.2 Identify examples of organisms and nonliving things.
2.3 Match parents with their offspring to show that plants and animlas closely resemble their parents.

My Body
Standard K-3:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of the distinct structures of the human body and the different functions they serve. (Life Science)

Indicators:
3.2
Identify the functions of the sensory organs (including the eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and skin).

Kindergarten Mathematics
Number and Operations
Standard K-2:
The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an emerging sense of quantity and numeral relationships, sets, and place values.

Indicators
2.1
Recall numbers, counting forward through 99 and backward from 10.
2.3 Compare sets of no more than 31 objects by using the terms more than, less than, and the same as.

Algebra
Standard K-3:
The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an emerging sense of repeating and growing patterns and classification based on attributes.

Indicators:
3.1
Identify simple growing patterns.

Measurement
Standard K-5:
The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an emerging sense of coin values and the measurement concepts of length, weight, time, and temperature.

Indicators:
5.3
Use nonstandard units to explore the measurement concepts of length and weight.

Data Analysis and Probability
Standard K-6:
The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an emerging sense of organizing and interpret data.

Indicators
6.1
Organize data in graphic displays in the form of drawings and pictures.
6.2 Interpret data in graphic displays in the form of drawings and pictures.

Grade K: SKL1 b / SKL2 a, c
Grade K: MKN1 a, e, f / MKM1 a, d

Kindergarten Science
SKL1:
Students will sort living organisms and non-living materials into groups by observable physical attributes.

Indicator:
b.
Group animals according to their observable features such as appearance, size, motion, where it lives, etc. (for example: A green frog has four legs and hops. A rabbit also hops.).

SKL2: Students will compare the similarities and differences in groups of organisms.

Indicators:
a.
Explain the similarities and differences in animals (color, size, appearance, etc.).
c.
Recognize the similarities and differences between a parent and a baby.

Kindergarten Mathematics
MKN1:
Students will connect numerals to the quantities they represent.

Indicators:
a.
Count a number of objects up to 30.
e.
Compare two or more sets of objects (1-10) and identify which set is equal to, more than, or less than the other.
f.
Estimate quantities using five and ten as a benchmark. (e.g., 9 is one five and four more. It is closer to two fives or one 10 than it is to one five.).

MKM1: Students will group objects according to common properties such as longer/shorter, more/less, taller/shorter, and heavier/lighter.

Indicators:
a.
Compare and order objects on the basis of length.
d.
Compare and order objects on the basis of weight.
