In My Backyard
: (Grades K-2 • Planetarium • 60 minutes) Children will enjoy story telling, poetry, and song as they learn about the seasons, constellations, planets, meteors and the Moon.

Kindergarten Science
Seasonal Changes
Standard K-4:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of seasonal weather changes. (Earth Science)

Indicators:
4.1
Identify weather changes that occur from day to day.
4.2 Compare the weather patterns that occur from season to season.
4.3 Summarize ways that the seasons affect plants and animals.

Grade 1 Science
Sun and Moon
Standard 1-3:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of the features of the sky and the patterns of the Sun and the Moon. (Earth Science)

Indicators:
3.1
Compare the features of the day and night sky.
3.2 Recall that the Sun is a source of heat and light for Earth.
3.3 Recognize that the Sun and the Moon appear to rise and set.
3.4 Illustrate changes in the Moon’s appearance (including patterns over time).

Exploring Motion
Standard 1-5:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of the positions and motions of objects. (Physical Science)

Indicators:
5.1
Identify the location of an object relative to another object.
5.4 Illustrate ways in which objects can move in terms of direction and speed (including straight forward, back and forth, fast or slow, zigzag, and circular).

Grade 2 Science
Weather
Standard 2-3:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of daily and seasonal weather conditions. (Earth Science)

Indicators:
3.1
Explain the effects of moving air as it interacts with objects.
3.2 Recall weather terminology (including temperature, wind direction, wind speed, and precipitation as rain, snow, sleet, and hail).
3.3 Illustrate the weather conditions of different seasons.
3.6 Identify safety precautions that one should take during severe weather conditions.

Grade K: SKE1 a,b
Grade 2: S2E1 a

Kindergarten Science
SKE1:
Students will describe time patterns (such as day to night and night to day) and objects (such as sun, moon, stars) in the day and night sky.

Indicators:
a.
Describe changes that occur in the sky during the day, as day turns into night, during the night, and as night turns into day.
b.
Classify objects according to those seen in the day sky and those seen in the night sky.

Grade 2 Science
S2E1:
Students will understand that stars have different sizes, brightness, and patterns.

Indicator:
a.
Describe the physical attributes of stars—size, brightness, and patterns.
