Do You See What I See?

Student Programs Lesson Information, Standards Correlations, and Post Visit Activities

Do You See What I See?: (Grade 4 • 60 minutes) Students will investigate and explore ways that light waves travel through solids, liquids and gases. Refraction, reflection, and diffraction will be discussed and observed using hands-on activities. Discussion will also include how the human eye receives and transmits light from its surroundings.

Grade 4 Science
Properties of Light and Electricity
Standard 4-5: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of light and electricity (Physical Science).

Indicators:
5.1 Summarize the basic properties of light (including brightness and colors).
5.2 Illustrate the fact that light, as a form of energy, is made up of many different colors.
5.3 Summarize how light travels and explain what happens when it strikes an object (including reflection, refraction, and absorption).
5.4 Compare how light behaves when it strikes transparent, translucent, and opaque materials.

 

Grade 4: S4P1 a, b, c

Grade 4 Science
S4P1: Students will investigate the nature of light using tools such as mirrors, lenses, and prisms.

Indicators:
a. Identify materials that are transparent, opaque, and translucent.
b. Investigate the reflection of light using a mirror and a light source.
c. Identify the physical attributes of a convex lens, a concave lens, and a prism and where each is used.
