| Vocabulary • Electricity-A form of energy made up of charges that can produce heat, light, sound, or motion • Static electricity- An electric charge that collects or builds up on the surface of an object • Current electricity- The flow of electric charges carried through a material such as wire or other conductors • Electron- Negatively charged particles that orbits the nucleus of atoms • Proton- Positively charged particle within the nucleus of atoms • Neutrons- A particle within the nucleus of atoms that has no electrical charge • Attract- To pull together • Repel- To push away • Electromagnet- Electric current flowing through coiled wire which produces a magnetic field • Conductor- Any material that allows electric charges to move through it (metal, especially copper; the human body) • Insulator- Materials that do not allow electric charges to flow freely through them (wood, glass, rubber) • Circuit- A path along which electricity moves • Simple Circuit- One complete path to follow • Series Circuit- Current flows through one path to provide power for two or more things • Parallel Circuits- Separate paths for electricity to flow through |
