All Sorts of Sorting

Student Programs Lesson Information, Standards Correlations, and Post Visit Activities

All Sorts of Sortin
g: (Grades 4K, 5K, & 1• 60 minutes) Students will describe and sort a variety of items using one or more attributes including size, shape, color, pattern, texture, and whether an item sinks or floats. Working together in small groups, students will sort and classify pattern blocks, fabric swatches, seashells, buttons, and more.

Pre & Post Visit Activities

This lesson supports the following science and mathematics standards:

South Carolina Schools

Georgia Schools

Grade K: SCSS 5.1, 5.2
Grade K: SCMS 3.4

Kindergarten Science
Exploring Matter
Standard K-5:
The student will demonstrate the understanding that objects can be described by their observable properties.

Indicators:
5.1
Classify objects by observable properties (including size, color, shape, magnetic attraction, heaviness, texture, and the ability to float in water).
5.2 Compare the properties of different types of materials (including wood, plastic, metal, cloth, and paper) from which objects are made.

Kindergarten Mathematics
Algebra
Standard K-3:
The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an emerging sense of repeating and growing patterns and classification based on attributes.

Indicators:
3.4
Classify objects according to one or more attributes such as color, size, shape, and thickness.

Grade K: SKP1 a, b
Grade K: MKM1 a
Grade 1: M1G2

Kindergarten Science
SKP1:
Students will describe objects in terms of the materials they are made of and their physical properties.

Indicators:
a.
Compare and sort materials of different composition (common materials include clay, cloth, paper, plastic, etc.).
b.
Use senses to classify common materials, such as buttons or swatches of cloth, according to their physical attributes (color, size, shape, weight, texture, buoyancy, flexibility).

Kindergarten Mathematics
MKM1:
Students will group objects according to common properties such as longer/shorter, more/less, taller/shorter, and heavier/lighter.

Indicator:
a.
Compare and order objects on the basis of length.

M1G2: Students will compare, contrast, and/or classify geometric shapes by the common attributes of position, shape, size, number of sides, and number of corners.
