National Astronomy Day

Earth and Sky Night

May 10, 2008

Come join us at the Ruth Patrick Science Center (RPSEC) at USC Aiken for a fun filled evening for the whole family as we celebrate the Earth and sky. Events include telescope viewing, planetarium shows, robotics and hands-on activites. Earth and Sky Night is proudly sponsored by the Astronomy Club of Augusta, USC Aiken, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, WKSX FM 92.7 and DuPont Planetarium.

DuPont Planetarium Shows: 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. Shows are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The admission fees are: Adults $4.50, Senior Citizens $3.50, 4K-12 Students $2.50, USCA Staff and Students $1.00. Children under 4 years old are not admitted. The planetarium will be featuring the new show, To the Moon and Beyond.

Hands -on Activities: 7-9:30 p.m. will be available to enrich our understandings of astronomy.

Telescope Viewing: Members of the Augusta Astronomy Club will have a number of telescopes available for use by the public. Come take advantage of this rare opportunity to see different telescopes in use and learn about the different models available for amateur astronomers. The Bechtel Telescope in the RPSEC Observatory will also be available for viewing the wonders of the sky.

NEW! M'Aiken Magic Robotics

We are pleased to announce that the M'Aiken Magic Robotics team will be present to show off their latest feats of robotics engineering! Robotics demonstrations will be held at 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, and 9:00 PM. Watch this year's FIRST Overdrive Competition robot use its pneumatic system to pick up and launch a 40-inch diameter, 7.3 pound ball over a 6 1/2 foot overpass! In addition to the demonstrations, visitors of all ages can test their skills using remote control to "test drive" a robot! The Tech Challenge "Quad Quandry" robots are programmed to pick up rings and place them onto goals of various heights.

We would like to give a big thank you to our sponsors: The Augusta Astronomy Club, the DuPont Planetarium, the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, WKSX FM 92.7, and the University of South Carolina Aiken.
