Natural Resources Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education Program (NRSMEEP)
A cooperative effort of the Department of Energy, the USDA Forest Service, the Silver Bluff Audubon Educatiion Center, and the University of South Carolina at Aiken
Greetings from the Natural Resources Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Program!! We are off to a good start to the new school year. Due to a reduction in our budget we are down to Jody Childs based at SRS, Anne Bohnet based at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center, and Debbie Lindsay is our administrative assistant based at SRS. Anne and I do teach together at SRS and Audubon one day per week to help schools reduce transportation cost by putting two classes on one bus. After 10 years of paying transportation costs and providing a free program, we are having to charge $3.00 per student and will not be able to pay for the transportation. We will still pay for substitute teachers during field trips and teacher development workshops.
We are pleased to announce that the results from our pre and post-test surveys show an average of about a 25% increase in student content knowledge and process skills. We are currently comparing participating PACT scores in science with those who did not participate. If we requested your scores, please send them to us as soon as possible.
We are currently working on a couple of grants and several funding opportunities so that we can continue our work to offer quality programs to the students and teachers in the CSRA. You can help by letting your congressman and school district officials know how important NRSMEEP has been for you and your students over the years. Please see the great teacher development workshops we are offering this year. They are all free and you will receive educational materials at each one.
Have a great school year!
Sincerely, Jody Childs, Director of NRSMEEP (803) 725-8712
