National Astronomy Day
Spring Earth & Sky Night
May 7, 2011

Come join us at the Ruth Patrick Science Center (RPSEC) at USC Aiken for a fun filled evening as we celebrate Spring Earth and Sky Night. Events include the planetarium show, The Explorers of Mauna Kea, hands-on activites, night-sky viewing, even viewings through the Bechtel Telescope. Earth and Sky Night is proudly sponsored by the Astronomy Club of Augusta, Cadette Troop 20164 from Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, USC Aiken, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center and DuPont Planetarium.

Join the “explorers” who work in the world-class observatories on Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on Hawaii. Learn about volcanoes and the unique conditions that make Mauna Kea one of the best observing sites on Earth. You’ll be “transported” to different latitudes on Earth to view the night sky and will use small mirrors to make a model of a reflecting telescope.

The Explorers of Mauna Kea: 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. Shows are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The admission fees are: Adults $4.50, Senior Citizens $3.50, 4K-12 Students $2.50, USCA Students and Staff $1.00.

Hands-on Activities: A variety of hands-on activities will be available from 7:00 - 9:30 to allow people to experience the wonders of earth and space science. Many activities will have materials you can take home with you to remember this wonderful night, and live animals will be on display, including snakes, turtles, alligators, and owls.

Night-Sky Viewing: Members of the Astronomy Club of Augusta will have a number of telescopes available for use by the public after dark. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to see different telescopes in use and to learn about the models available for amateur astronomers. The Bechtel Telescope in the RPSEC Observatory will also be available for viewing the wonders of the sky.

We would like to give a big thank you to our sponsors: The Astronomy Club of Augusta, Cadette Troop 20164 from Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, the DuPont Planetarium, the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, and the University of South Carolina Aiken.
