The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center is named for a pioneer in the field of limnology, the study of freshwater ecosystems. Dr. Ruth Patrick was a highly repected and well-known scientist who has studied the waterways of South Carolina for decades. Her contibution to this field allowed her to be inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Science and Technology on March 8, 1996.
In order to encourage students to experience further the fun of scientific discovery and experimentation, the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center Environmental Science Award was created, with the goal of the award being to acknowledge and encourage the research activities of young people that carry on the pioneering, scientific research of Dr. Ruth Patrick.
Each year, students are given this award for their exemplary effort in their studies.
