Fall High School Course
Ecology of Central and Coastal South Carolina

This fall-semester course is the equivalent of a 1/2-credit high school lab science course, and will focus on Ecology of Central and Coastal South Carolina. There will also be a 1/2-credit spring semester course that will focus on the Ecology of the Piedmont and Southern Appalachians. Each semester will consist of over 90 hours of exciting hands-on instruction at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center (RPSEC) and inspiring outdoor field experiences. The fall and spring sessions may be taken independently or together.

August 21, 1-5 pm: Intro to Ecology, Maps & Compasses, and Orienteering on Campus
August 28, 1-5 pm: Exploring Earth Resources and Geocaching on Campus
September 9, 1-5 pm: Plant Identification and Dichotomous Keys, Plant Walk on Campus
September 16, 1-5 pm: Explore Hitchcock Woods
September 23, 8 am - 4 pm: Silver Bluff Audubon Center – pond & forest ecology, soil pit
September 30, 1-5 pm: Aiken State Park, canoeing
October 7, 1-5 pm: Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve
October 12, 10 am - 2 pm: Science Education Enrichment Day
October 14, 1-5 pm: Student presentations, Planetarium Show on Weather
October 21, 1-5 pm: Explore Hitchcock Woods, sample Black Gum Pond and stream water
October 30 - November 1: 3-day trip to Barrier Island Environmental Ed. Program, Seabrook Is, SC with a stop at Orangeburg National Fish Hatchery on 9/18
November 4, 1-5 pm: at RPSEC
November 11, 7 am -5 pm: Congaree National Park, stop enroute at Peachtree Rock Nature Preserve in Lexington County
November 18, 1-5 pm: Horse Creek Valley
November 25, 1-5 pm: Carolina Bays, visit one near Odell Weeks Center in Aiken
December 2, 1-5 pm: at RPSEC
December 9, 1-5 pm: Final presentations and final exam
