Using Computers to Support Instruction

Catalog Description: Use of computer technology in teaching and managing science classes and programs in grades K-12.

Course Description: Teachers will learn the necessary techniques to make the computer an instructional tool in the classroom. The course is designed to be platform independent so that techniques learned can be applied to any computer system. Teachers will learn the basics of word processing, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint. Teachers will produce handout materials, quizzes and tests, a computerized grade book, student progress reports, an electronic lesson presentation, and a classroom newsletter.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course the students will:

  1. create a grade book using a spreadsheet.
  2. create various documents using a word processor.
  3. create a data base of student information.
  4. design and produce student progress reports.
  5. integrate graphics, word processing, and spreadsheet objects into a single file.
  6. create a classroom newsletter that their students can help to create.
  7. evaluate various computer software titles for use in their classrooms.
  8. understand and use a computer networking system.
  9. understand how to use the Internet to retrieve information.
