The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center is pleased to announce the following courses and workshops for Spring and Summer 1997. To register for classes and workshops sponsored by the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center and the CSRA HUB, please contact Angela Taylor at (803) 648-6851, ext. 3313. Registration can be completed over the phone. Most graduate-credit classes have a fee of $75 made payable to the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center. If you have never taken a graduate course in the USC system, an additional $35 fee will be assessed by the Office of Graduate Regional Studies.

    Using Computers to Support Instruction
    EDTE 631

    Students will learn the necessary techniques to make the computer an instructional tool in the classroom. Students will learn the basics of an integrated word processor, spreadsheet, and database program. This integrated package will be created to produce handout materials, quizzes and tests, a computerized grade book, a database of students, student progress reports, and a classroom newsletter.

    Technology and Instruction
    EDTE 731

    This course provides students with a survey of the instructional uses of computers and other technologies. Students will develop a thematic unit of instruction, which will determine the content of the course activities. Software relating to the theme will be selected and evaluated. Students will create technology-centered projects and use the Internet as a resource of information related to the theme.

    ALOHA '97

    Hawaii Course Images



    Start saving your money for the trip of a lifetime. Jeff Priest, Director of the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, is planning a summer field course in Hawaii this coming summer. Although dates and itinerary are not finalized, this course will prove to be the most exotic one yet. Those who have been on Jeff's trips know that he goes first class (well, okay, coach class), stays at the most expensive lodges (well, okay, L.L. Bean Tents), eats the most exotic foods (well, okay, peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwiches), and uses the most unusual ground transportation known to man (well, okay, so he hikes). The objective of the trip is to learn the unique geology, flora and fauna of Hawaii. The trip will be approximately 10 days in length (probably the later part of July and early part of August), with a one week classroom session before the field portion of the trip. The estimated cost of the trip will be $2,500 - $3,000 (includes airfare, lodging and food). An organizational meeting will be held the later part of January.     Envirolanguagesocialstudies Workshop
    Saturday - March 22, 1997
    As the name implies, this workshop is interdisciplinary and uses the environment as a focus. Sessions will include experiences with a Calculator Based Laboratory (CBL), setting up a database to share data between schools, language arts activities, as well as botany and birding activities.     Science Education for Public Understanding Program

    Course Description: This course is a classroom/field oriented course designed to introduce participants to the ecology of the Southern Appalachian mountain system. Emphasis will be on selected vegetational communities within the Smoky Mountains National Park. The course will consist of ten, 3 hour classroom meetings and a one week field trip to the Smoky Mountain National Park.

    Integrating Science, Math, and Technology in the Middle and High School Classroom

    Course Description: This course is designed to introduce middle and secondary mathematics and science teachers to the use of graphing calculator-based laboratory (CBL) technologies. These utilities will be used to teach integrated math and science topics. Participants will use the TI-83 graphics calculator, the CBL systems, and the corresponding probes to input and analyze data. While investigating, teachers will integrate the national and state mathematics and science standards into their curricula It will emphasize constructivist learning techniques and performance based assessments.

    GLOBE WORKSHOP - Grades K - 12

    GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is an international science and environmental education program which connects scientists, teachers, and students through the Internet. During a GLOBE workshop, teachers are taught how to collect specific data in hydrology, atmosphere/weather, land cover/biology, GPS (Global Positioning System), and soils. Teachers are also given computer training and shown methods of integrating GLOBE into existing school frameworks through activities in the GLOBE TeacherŐs Guide. Although the GLOBE topics may sound highly technical, even early elementary students are able to collect valuable data and share it with other GLOBE schools around the world. Teddy and Ned Shuler of the Natural Resources Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education Program, and others would like to facilitate a GLOBE workshop during Summer 1997.     SC MAPS WORKSHOP
    January 31 - February 1
    The RPSEC/CSRA HUB will be sponsoring a SC MAPS training session January 31 - February 1 at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center. SC MAPS is an integrated science, mathematics, social studies and language arts middle school curriculum developed by the SC Department of Education and SC Land Resources Commission. The RPSEC/CSRA HUB would like for middle schools to send teams of 4 teachers to the training session. Each team should have a person who is designated as the Science Specialist, Mathematics Specialist, Social Studies Specialist and Language Arts Specialist. The training session will be limited to 5 teams. The cost of the training session will be $75/team. In return, each school that sends a team will receive a $600 SC MAPS set. Each member of the team will receive the instructional packet of activities to use with SC MAPS. The schedule for the SC MAPS training is as follows: Friday, January 31, 5:00-9:00 pm (includes dinner) Saturday, February 1, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm(includes lunch) The CSRA Hub will pay for lodging on Friday night for those wishing to stay over night. To apply, send a letter of interest, including the names of team members (and their designation...i.e. science specialist, etc.), school name and address, home addresses, telephone numbers, and social security numbers of team members, to the RPSEC.     The Center for Science Education at the University of South Carolina Announces
    Earth Science For Teachers I

    Course Description: This course is one of the first of several new "Distance and On-Site" science courses which will be instituted by the Center over the next few semesters. Each class meeting will follow a modified "learning cycle" format beginning with an "exploration" activity, moving on to a "concept development" phase based on a CD-ROM prepared specifically for the course, and ending with an "application" activity which has been designed to present the material at the elementary or middle school level. The courses will be taught by the master earth science teachers who assisted in their development. A weekend day field trip will also be arranged.     SC Statewide Systemic Initiative in Mathematics & Science
    1997 Curriculum Leadership Institute
    June 9 - June 27, 1997
    for K-12 teachers in Aiken, Allendale, Barnwell, & Edgefield Counties

    Participants will earn statewide recognition as leading professionals in their field; a stipend and materials package totaling $600 for participating in each of the CLIs; three hours of graduate credit each summer for a total of six hours; recertification credit if the teacher chooses not to receive graduate credit; tools and techniques to assist teachers in teaching problem solving skills that helps students perform better on standardized tests such as the MAT-7; immediate access to curriculum materials and other resources and information provided through the HUBs; participation in other leadership opportunities identified or sponsored by the HUB; and opportunities and support to provide workshops/seminars for other teachers in the HUB.

    Enhancing the Teaching of Math with the TI-83 and TI-92 Calculator
    SMED 769
    The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center will be sponsoring SMED 769 during July 1997. This course features hands-on use of the TI-83 and TI-92 calculators and Calculator Based Laboratory (CBL) units in teaching and learning mathematics. Teachers will be immersed in hands-on algebra, statistics, and interactive geometry using cooperative learning environments. Guided discovery activities and real world applications in algebra will be assessment, implantation, and pedagogical issues will be incorporated throughout with special attention to NCTM Standards.
