A Webquest for Kindergarten
Hi there, kids! I'm Buffy the Butterfly. Today, you will explore the many stages that a caterpillar goes through to become a gorgeous butterfly. Let's explore together to learn how I got my wings! Today you are going to figure out how I, Buffy the Butterfly, became the lovely butterfly that you see. I did not always look this way, and I had to go through several changes to become a butterfly. to help you learn all about me, you are going to listen to a book read by your teacher, label a chart, and create a butterfly mobile of your own that goes through all of the stages that I did. Have fun!
To ensure that you understand my life cycle, I am going to have you complete 4 tasks for me. One will involve listening to your teacher, but the rest you will do by yourself! Good luck!
Task 1 - Listen to your teacher as she reads The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Be a good listener.
Task 2- Buffy the butterfly wants you to know just how she became the beautiful butterfly that she is today. She has written out the stages she went through for you to read. The picture below shows you what Buffy looked like at each stage of her wonderful transformation. Make sure you know what each stage looks like so that you can complete Task 3.
Stage 1: The Egg- The female attaches the egg to leaves, stems, and other parts of a plant.
Stage 2: The Caterpillar (or larva) is the stage of the butterfly that resembles a worm.
Stage 3: The Chrysalis (or pupa) is the stage when the caterpillar turns into a butterfly.
Stage 4: The Butterfly - the colorful butterfly that we see after it comes out of its chrysalis or cocoon.
Task 3 - Today you get to create a butterfly book. You will make a book on the life cycle of a butterfly. Your teacher will have materials available for your use. Each page needs to show a different stage of my life cycle. Have fun and remember to use lots of color. Click here if you need help with the names of each stage or what I look like during that stage of my life! Have fun!
Task4 - Now, since you know all about my life, I would love for you to create a mobile to show all the stages of my life. Click here for directions on how to make your mobile as well as materials you will need. Be creative!
You will be evaluated by how well you understand the life cycle of a butterfly and if you can identify the stages on your own through completion of the above tasks. Completing all of your work is very important!
Congratulations on learning all of the stages that made me a beautiful butterfly. Now go outside and find all the stages of a butterfly's life in nature. You are now prepared! Happy hunting!
