2.3.2 Weather Terminology and 2.3.4 Measuring Weather conditions using tools:

Terms and tools for students to use while discussing weather conditions:

Temperature: How hot or cold the air is at a given time
To measure temperature: Thermometer - it can be recorded in Celsius or Fahrenheit

Wind Direction: The direction from which the wind blows
To measure wind direction: Wind Sock or Wind Vane-it will point in the direction the wind is blowing
Wind Sock - Fold one sheet of newspaper in half. Cut away approximately half of the paper from the unfolded side. The cut away paper should be crumpled and kept for later use. You now have a rectangle. Tape or staple closed one long side and one short side of the rectangle. Since one side is the fold, there is only one open end now. To strengthen the open end, fold a " hem all around the edge of the open end. Tape or staple a piece of string (about 18") to the end you have just folded. You may want to let the children decorate their wind socks with crayons, markers, or paint. After decorating, place the crumpled newspaper inside the wind sock to keep it open. The wind sock is ready to be flown as a kite or tied to a post to pick up any wind as it comes. To create your own wind vane

Wind Speed: How fast or slow the wind blows
To measure wind speed: Beaufort Wind Scale-it is recorded in miles per hour

Precipitation: The type of water falling from the clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
To measure percipitation: Rain Gauge-it is recorded in inches

2.3.3 Different seasons

It is essential for students to know the four basic seasons:

Winter: The weather may be cold or freezing; there may be rain, snow, or sleet

Spring: The weather starts to get warmer, there may be a lot of rain; the air can be windy

Summer: The weather is often hot and dry; tere may be little or no rain; the air can be windy

Fall: The weather starts to get cooler; there may be little or no rainfall; the air can be windy
