Hard Times

I am a third grade teacher of math, science, and social studies. I enjoy teaching all subjects, but my love is definitely social studies. I choose to focus my thematic unit on a social studies topic. The title of my lesson is " Hard Times".

3.4.7 Summarize the effects of Reconstruction in South Carolina, including the development of public education, racial advancements and tensions, and economic changes. (H, E, P)

After the Civil War the United States federal troops occupied South Carolina. During Reconstruction, as white South Carolinians saw it, illiterates, carpetbaggers, and scalawags stole money, putting the state into debt. The constitution was revised in 1868 by a convention in which blacks outnumbered whites by 76 to 48; blacks attained the offices of lieutenant governor and US representative.
For the next 100 years, South Carolina suffered through political turmoil, crop failures, and recessions. A major political change came in the 1880s with a large population increase upcountry and the migration of poor whites to cities.
This gave farmers and industrial workers a majority of votes, and they found their leader in Benjamin Ryan "Pitchfork Ben" Tillman, he stirred up class and racial hatreds by attacking the many of the citizens of Charleston. Tillman won the control of the state Democratic Party; he served as governor from 1890 to 1894 and then as US senator until his death in 1918. However, his success inaugurated a period of political and racial that saw the a decline in the number of black voters.
