Identifying Circle Parts

A circle is a closed figure made up of points that are the same distance from the center. Let's take a look at some parts of a circle.

Chord

A chord is a line segment that has its endpoints on the circle

Diameter

A diameter is a chord that passes through the center.

Radius

A radius is a line segment that connects the center of the circle with a point on the circle.

An Extra Tidbit

A radius is only one half of the line that passes through the center of the circle. Therefore, a radius is one half of the diameter.
So, for example, if the radius of a circle is 6, then the diameter is 12.

Let's Practice

After you have reviewed the circle parts, test your knowledge with the Circle Quiz. If you need help, be sure to call your teacher.
